Advanced Physical Agent Modalities
Principles and Practical Application
Fast Facts:
Skill Level: Beginner
Live Course
Who Should Attend:
This entry level course is designed for OTs and OTAs and is a great review course for PTs, PTAs and Athletic Trainers.
Participants are cautioned to apply new information and skills within the scope of state licensure law. The clinical use of physical agent modalities is governed by state law/practice act. Completion of this course does not give the participant the right to apply treatments that are not covered under their specific state’s practice act.Locations:

| Date TBD TBA Check alternative course: 30 hour Evidence Based Physical Agents: Application and Practice |
This is a comprehensive, hands-on 30 hour class, taught in two 2-day sessions.
Develop your clinical skills and practical knowledge. Focus on evidence-based clinical review and practical applications across the lifespan for neurological, rehabilitation and orthopedic patients using Advanced Physical Agent Modalities including the thermal agents of heat, light, & therapeutic ultrasound; and the electrical modalities including TNS, FES and iontophoresis.
Part One focuses on Thermal Agents; Part Two focuses on Electrical Stim. Each lab session has equipment in the therapist’s hands. Practical applications are reviewed and practiced for each modality. The course is designed to assist the therapist in integrating information regarding the use of modalities appropriately when treating their patients. The expectation is to “learn it today, then practice it tomorrow”.
Theoretical concepts will be presented within a framework of the biologic principles and evidence based clinical applications for the modalities reviewed in class. At the completion of the course, participants will be able to appropriately select parameters for using thermal agents to enhance treatment. Review and practice application of TNS, FES and Iontophoresis, including parameter selections for stroke, neuro rehab vs. orthopedic rehab, in both adults and pediatrics. Chronic pain, and muscle strengthening will also be addressed. Case studies provide real-life patient problems and treatment solutions.
Come prepared to share your difficult patient situations and engage in group problem-solving sessions.
Common questions this course will answer:
- Is it safe to use ultrasound over metal implants or over fractures?
- Can you use ultrasound with electrical stimulation?
- What does pulsed ultrasound do?
- Can I use the same machine and setting for muscle stimulation and pain control?
- Do the settings really matter, or can I just use presets?
- What is the difference between iontophoresis and phonophoresis? Which works better?
- How do you pick the electrode polarity in iontophoresis?
- Can I use ultrasound and/or FES with a pediatric/geriatric/neuro population?
- Should I have patients exercise with stimulation or not?
Course Objectives:
Part One: Thermal Agents
Upon completing Part One, the participant will be able to:
- list appropriate treatment parameters for a variety of clinical diagnoses using heat, ultrasound, and light.
- recognize/identify the basic properties of heat, ultrasound, and light.
- recognize the current research which provides evidence for therapeutic uses of all the superficial physical agent modalities.
- list the contraindications for therapeutic heat, ultrasound, and light.
- identify how to use, store and document ultrasound and phonophoresis mediums and medications
Part Two: Electrical Stimulation
Upon completing Part Two, the participant will be able to:
- recognize current research which provides evidence for therapeutic & rehabilitative uses of FES including high volt ,medium frequency, TENS, iontophoresis
- identify the principle of electrode size, material, and placement technique.
- recognize/identify the guidelines & contraindications in working with electrical stimulation & iontophoresis
- Identity and differentiate the use and choice of parameters for each of the electrical modalities with different patient populations and for different diagnoses, including muscle strengthening and re-education, pain and edema control.
