This 3-week interactive, multimedia online course is designed to help clinicians recognize the role of the cervical spine in Upper Extremity Overuse Syndromes. The focus of the course is to provide participants with the skills to perform an upper quarter screen and cervical spine exam so they recognize when distal symptoms may have a central origin. Participants will be guided through the clinical decision making process to understand when and how to treat an upper extremity patient with problems related to the cervical region and when to refer a patient out. Evaluation and treatment for common pathologies including thoracic outlet syndrome, peripheral nerve compression, forward head postures, and others will be covered. The course is designed to provide a deeper understanding of the cervical region anatomy and pathology to allow you to recognize when your “hand patient” might not be a simple “hand patient.”

Program subject to change. Participants are cautioned to apply new information and skills within the scope of state licensure law.

Course Objectives:

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Demonstrate basic knowledge of cervical region anatomy
  •  Have an understanding of an upper quarter screen and why you should perform one on most of your upper extremity patients
  • Describe  median, radial and ulnar neural provocation tests,  thoracic outlet special tests and cervical spine special tests for nerve root compression
  • Demonstrate the knowledge of differential diagnosis for UE conditions such as carpel tunnel syndrome versus proximal median nerve entrapment versus C5,6,7,8,T1 nerve root compression.
  • Have an understanding of the treatment for forward head posture including strengthening the deep cervical stabilizing muscles, nerve glide techniques and thoracic outlet syndrome treatment.
