This 3-week interactive on-line course will study the anatomy and pathology of the shoulder girdle as it applies to rehabilitation of the upper extremity.  Shoulder anatomy will be reviewed from a clinical perspective.  Directed readings from textbooks and journal articles will support an on-line discussion regarding the shoulder and common pathologies.
Some specific concepts to be discussed include…

  • The crucial role of the rotator cuff muscles in the function of the shoulder complex function
  • What happens when the rotator cuff muscles are not functioning correctly
  • ACJ and sub acromial space variations and their implications for function

Course Objectives:

At the completion of this course the learner should:

  • Understand the anatomy and common pathologies of the glenohumeral joint and scapulothoracic articulation as it applies to rehabilitation of the upper extremity.
  • Use the anatomy and pathology information to augment clinical decision making

Agenda:

Module I
How the shoulder works:  The focus of this module is to review the bony and muscular anatomy of the shoulder girdle.  Concepts such as the role of the sub acromial space in shoulder function, the role of the rotator cuff muscles, and the importance of the scapulothoracic articulation will be discussed.

Module II
When the shoulder is not working well:  The focus of this module is to discuss some common shoulder pathologies.  How these pathologies present in the shoulder and upper extremity will be discussed. 

Module III
Putting it all together:  What is the cause of the cause?  The focus of this module is to enhance your clinical decision making skills by using the anatomical and pathological information covered in Modules I and II. 

 

Sonya Anderson Worth, PT, PGDipHSc, OCS is a clinical faculty member at the University of Vermont, Department of Rehabilitation and Movement Science, Doctorate of Physical Therapy program. Sonya is currently practicing at Fletcher Allen Health Care out patient Physical Therapy in Burlington, Vermont. Sonya is involved in 2 research projects at the University of Vermont. Sonya has published and spoken at conferences across the country. Sonya earned Bachelor's Degrees in Physiotherapy and in Physical Education (Kinesiology) from the University of Otago, New Zealand. Sonya also earned a Post Graduate Diploma in Health Science specializing in Manipulative Physiotherapy from Auckland University of Technology, New Zealand. In 2009, she gained recognition as a Nationally Certified Orthopedic Clinical Specialist.
