Comprehensive, lab-intensive, skill-building workshop is designed for occupational therapists and physical therapists.  Workshop will include principles of joint and soft tissue mobilization, anatomy and biomechanics of the hand wrist and elbow-- in lecture format. Hands-on labs will cover joint mobilization of the thumb, fingers, wrist and elbow; and, soft tissue treatment of the hand and forearm. 

Common diagnoses of the elbow, wrist and hand will be discussed and techniques for treatment will be practiced. This is a lab oriented workshop--with emphasis on participants' feeling comfortable enough with the techniques to begin utilizing them in the clinic.

Please make sure to wear loose fitting, comfortable clothes (tank top) to participate in the lab sessions.

Program subject to change. Participants are cautioned to apply new information and skills within the scope of state licensure law.

 Course Objectives:

Upon completion of workshop, therapist will:

  • identify the principles of joint mobilization and be able to apply them to the hand and elbow joints
  • be able to palpate and mobilize the thumb and fingers
  • be able to palpate and mobilize individual carpal bones
  • be able to palpate and mobilize the proximal and mid-carpal joints of the wrist
  • be able to palpate and mobilize the radiohumeral, ulnohumeral, proximal radioulnar, and distal radioulnar joints of the elbow
  • demonstrate several techniques for treating soft tissues of the hand and forearm
  • identify and demonstrate which technique(s) can be used with specific diagnoses in the hand, wrist and elbow

Accepted by NBCOT*,  HTCC+, and most state OT regulatory boards. Check with your state  board to verify. Certificate of attendance will be issued to all participants upon completion of the workshop and may be used for CEU verification of credits. CE Credits vary by state. Please check with your state board/certifying agency to confirm conversion of contact hours to CE.

Joanne Wagenbrenner, PT, MOMT, CHTJoanne received her certificate in Physical Therapy from Mayo School of Allied Health in 1981.  For one year she was one of 2 therapists on the Evaluation Team at Mayo Clinic.  In this capacity she worked closely with physicians in evaluating patients and developing treatment programs for them.  In 1982 she returned to San Diego and spent the next 14 years specializing in Orthopedic Manual Therapy. 

In 1992 Joanne successfully completed a two year, part-time clinical residency program with the Ola Grimsby Institute and received her Masters of Orthopedic Manual Therapy and certificate in Manual Therapy Part I. In 1999 she completed her doctoral dissertation “Demonstrating the Effectiveness of Longitudinal Soft Tissue Mobilization of the Extensor Forearm to Improve Tissue Flexibility and Grip Strength”. Valuing education she has completed over 100 continuing education courses in order to bring the best care to her patients.

Since 1995, Joanne has specialized in hand therapy using her skills as a manual therapist in her treatment techniques. She received her CHT in 2001. At present she works part-time in an outpatient orthopedic therapy office. She has traveled extensively throughout the United States teaching continuing education courses to occupational therapists and physical therapists who are specializing in Hand Therapy or wish to specialize in Hand Therapy. 

While active in the Arthritis Foundation she served on the Medical and Scientific Committee and offered numerous in-services related to arthritis and Fibromyalgia.
