Dynamic one-day, hands-on course teaches you how to safely and effectively perform joint mobilizations and mobilizations with active movement for all the upper extremity joints. Make the most of your treatment time knowing that you are applying your joint mobilizations with the correct amplitude, velocity and direction that will help your patients to gain range and reduce pain.

This course is designed for Occupational Therapists and Physical Therapist who are interested in improving their joint accessory motion evaluation skills and joint mobilization treatment skills. 

Learn about accessory movement techniques, Maitland Grades of Movement, the Concave Convex Rule and the benefits of Joint Mobilizations with Active Movement.  Practice precise joint mobilizations and joint mobilization with active movement techniques to facilitate effective treatment of patients with common orthopedic pathologies of the shoulder, elbow, forearm, wrist and hand. Learn taping techniques, and home exercise programs for upper extremity conditions including Tennis elbow, Golfer’s elbow (Medial epicondylalgia), glenohumeral impingement syndrome, status post Colles fractures and more. Includes current research in support of joint mobilizations with movement to enable you to practice evidence-based medicine.

Please bring:  a mobilization belt (or a very long gait belt) and a small towelPlease wear a tank top so your lab partner can treat your entire upper extremity.

 Course Objectives:

Upon completion of this course, each participant will be able to:

  • Perform joint accessory motion testing on the upper extremity
  •  Understand how joint accessory motion testing becomes joint mobilization treatment
  • Treat joint restrictions in the upper extremity with joint mobilizations
  • Treat common musculoskeletal conditions of the upper extremity by performing joint mobilizations with active movement

Accepted by NBCOT*,  HTCC+, and most state OT regulatory boards. Check with your state  board to verify. Certificate of attendance will be issued to all participants upon completion of the workshop and may be used for CEU verification of credits. CE Credits vary by state. Please check with your state board/certifying agency to confirm conversion of contact hours to CE.

Sonya Anderson Worth, PT, PGDipHSc, OCS is a clinical faculty member at the University of Vermont, Department of Rehabilitation and Movement Science, Doctorate of Physical Therapy program. Sonya is currently practicing at Fletcher Allen Health Care out patient Physical Therapy in Burlington, Vermont. Sonya is involved in 2 research projects at the University of Vermont. Sonya has published and spoken at conferences across the country. Sonya earned Bachelor’s Degrees in Physiotherapy and in Physical Education (Kinesiology) from the University of Otago, New Zealand. Sonya also earned a Post Graduate Diploma in Health Science specializing in Manipulative Physiotherapy from Auckland University of Technology, New Zealand. In 2009, she gained recognition as a Nationally Certified Orthopedic Clinical Specialist.

Karen Westervelt PT, MS, PGDipHSc, OCS, ATC is a clinical faculty member at the University of Vermont Department of Rehabilitation and Movement Science, Doctorate of Physical Therapy Program. Karen is currently practicing at Copley Hospital out patient Physical Therapy in Stowe, Vermont. Karen has published in peer-reviewed journals in the area of orthopedics and has presented at conferences across the country. Karen earned an Athletic Training Certification, a Bachelor’s Degree in Physical Therapy, and a Master’s Degree in Movement Science and Rehabilitation from the University of Vermont. Karen also earned a Post Graduate Diploma in Health Science specializing in Manipulative Physiotherapy from Auckland University of Technology, New Zealand. In 2009, she gained recognition as a Nationally Certified Orthopedic Clinical Specialist.
