This intermediate level workshop is designed to enhance the understanding of the impact of tendon injuries and fractures on the wrist and hand.

The comprehensive workshop provides an analytical approach to the rehabilitation of tendon injuries and fractures, combined with hands-on splinting lab sessions. Animation and video-clips of cadaver dissection, surgery, pathomechanics, and treatment enhance the learning experience. Class size is limited to maximize participant to faculty interaction.

 Course Objectives:

Upon completion of workshop, therapist will:

  • anatomy of the PIP joint, flexor tendons, and extensor tendons
  • normal physiology of digital motion
  • management of flexor and extensor tendons using various methods described in the literature
  • management of PIP joint injuries
  • management of distal radius fractures
  • principles of wrist and hand splinting
  • fabrication of a variety of splints addressing limitations at the MCP, PIP and wrist joints

This course features an in-depth presentation of:

  • Anatomy of Flexor and Extensor Tendons
  • Management of Flexor and Extensor Tendon Injuries
  • Management of Distal Radius Fractures
  • Management of Digital Fractures
  • PIP Joint Dysfunction
  • Principles of Splinting
  • Splinting lab includes: 
    • Kleinert splint
    • Reverse Kleinert splint
    • Dynamic and Static Progressive wrist extension and/or flexion splint
    • Dynamic Supination splint
    • Dynamic MCP flexion splint or PIP extension splint
    • serial casting for PIP joint

CE Credits

14 contact hours in upper extremity and hand therapy education

Day 1: 8:00 am - 5:00pm. Registration begins at 7:30 am.
Day 2: 8:00 am - 4:00 pm

Approved by CA Board of Occupational Therapy for 14 contact hours for post-professional education in the advanced practice area of hand therapy (#22-H2).

Accepted by NBCOT*,  HTCC+, and most state OT regulatory boards. Check with your state  board to verify. Certificate of attendance will be issued to all participants upon completion of the workshop and may be used for CEU verification of credits. CE Credits vary by state. Please check with your state board/certifying agency to confirm conversion of contact hours to CE.

Shrikant J. Chinchalkar OTR, CHT Shrikant J. Chinchalkar OTR, CHT is a hand therapist at the Hand & Upper Limb Centre, St. Joseph's Health Centre in London, Ontario, Canada. He graduated from Nagpur University, India in 1971.

He has over 35 years of clinical experience in treating upper extremity conditions. Shrikant has conducted instructional courses on "Biomechanics of the Hand" at the American Society for the Surgery of the Hand, the American Association of Hand Surgery, the American Society of Hand Therapists, Australian Hand Therapy Association, South African Society of Hand Therapists and Canadian Association of Occupational Therapists' annual meetings.

He has presented papers and has conducted instructional courses on "Upper Extremity Rehabilitation" in Canada, USA, Mexico, Australia, Singapore, Belgium, Italy, France, Greece, Finland, UK, South Africa, India, Spain, Turkey and Venezuela.  Shrikant was awarded the 2003 "Paul Brand Award of Excellence in Hand Therapy" by the American Society of Hand Therapists. He received the "Best Clinical Paper" and "Best Poster Presentation" awards at the annual meeting of ASHT and an "Award of Excellence" by the Sisters of St. Joseph's Hospital in London, Ontario. He received an "Outstanding Alumnae" award by the All India Occupational Therapists Association in 2008. He has published papers and abstracts in numerous journals related to Upper Extremity Surgery and Therapy.
