Develop your clinical skills and practical knowledge. Focus on evidence-based clinical review and practical applications for neuro, rehab and orthopaedic patients using therapeutic ultrasound, TNS, FES and iontophoresis.

Dispel the myths! Learn interesting and exciting clinical applications for traditional modalities-- supported by research and literature-- in this lab intensive workshop. Includes review of recent research.

Participants will be able to appropriately select parameters for using US to enhance treatment. Review of TNS, FES and Iontophoresis, including parameter selections for stroke and neuro rehab in adults and pediatrics, chronic pain, muscle strengthening, and wound care.

Case studies provide real-life patient problems and treatment solutions. Come prepared to share your difficult patient situations and engage in group problem solving.

Hands-on lab course provides TNS and FES units for each two participants; remainder reviewed in groups. Participants will benefit from prior exposure and knowledge of modalities and anatomy.

Program subject to change. Participants are cautioned to apply new information and skills within the scope of state licensure law.

 Course Objectives:

Upon completing the ultrasound portion of the workshop, the participant will:

  • be able to select appropriate ultrasound treatment parameters for a variety of clinical diagnoses.
  • understand the basic properties of ultrasound.
  • be familiar with current research which provides evidence for therapeutic uses of ultrasound.
  • know the contraindications for therapeutic ultrasound.
  • understand the appropriate use, storage and documentation of US mediums and medications

Upon completing the electrical stimulation portion of the workshop, the participant will:

  • be familiar with current research which provides evidence for therapeutic and rehabilitative uses of FES/TENS/iontophoresis
  • understand the principle of electrode size, material, and placement technique.
  • be familiar with the guidelines and contraindications in working with electrical stimulation and iontophoresis
  • understand the use and choice of parameters for FES/TENS with different patient populations and for different diagnoses.

Common questions this course will answer:

  • Is it safe to use ultrasound over metal implants or over fractures?
  • When do you use ultrasound with electrical stimulation?
  • What does pulsed ultrasound do?
  • Can I use the same machine and setting for muscle stimulation and pain control?
  • Do the settings really matter, or can I just use presets?
  • What is the difference between iontophoresis and phonophoresis? Which works better?
  • How do you pick the electrode polarity in iontophoresis?
  • Can I use ultrasound and/or FES with a pediatric/geriatric/neuro population?
  • Should I have patients exercise with stimulation or not?

About the instructor and the workshop

I loved the hands-on experience. Very informative; instructor is very easy to listen to. Sara is very knowlegeable and receptive to class's needs.

E-stim for neuro patients was great.

Very well organized. Funtional and practical information.

Sara made a somewhat dry subject very interesting. Enjoyed the case studies and the "real life" patient applications and examples.

This course exceeded my expectations. A great investment!

Fantastic job addressing an audience with very diverse experience levels.

Sara is knowledgeable and energetic, well organized and provides a logical progression with her presentation.

This course was an excellent review. Sara provided ample opportunities for questions and answers. It was helpful to get clarification on some of the long held "myths" we have been taught.

Enthusiastic and energetic presenter. Sara easily kept my attention for two days.
