Chapter 25: Upper Extremity Problems in Clients with Central Nervous System Dysfunction

This chapter addresses the evaluation and treatment of patients who are recovering from hand surgery or commonly encountered neurological disorders that affect the upper extremities: Post-Polio Syndrome, Cerebral Vascular Accidents, Multiple Sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease, and essential tremor.  Pathology, indications for surgery and operative techniques are reviewed in detail with an explanation of the most common post-operative complications.

Photographs illustrate pre- and post-operative hands at different stages of recovery and splinting options. Review of hand therapy treatment includes: wound care, scar and edema management, exercise and splinting.  Clinical reasoning considerations are provided regarding progression of various therapy treatments and splinting.

Highlighted throughout the chapter are:

  • clinical pearls, precautions and concerns
  • “what to say to clients”
  • “tips from the field”
