Chapter 17: Arthritis

This chapter provides an overview of the pathology, evaluation,  and treatment methods recommended specifically for Osteoarthritis (OA) and Rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Several charts detail joint protection principles, deformities of the Rheumatoid thumb, and the stages of Rheumatoid Arthritis.

Photographs illustrate wrist, thumb and finger deformities commonly found in patients with OA and RA. Clinical reasoning considerations are provided regarding progression of various therapy treatments and splinting. The information in this chapter will enable the therapist to individualize effective treatment programs for this difficult patient population.

  • identify the 4 stages of Rheumatoid arthritis
  • identify the 6 types of deformities of the Rheumatoid thumb and 6 deformities found in the wrist and fingers
  • identifythe non-operative and operative treatment of all the arthritic conditions seen in the wrist and hand
  • identify strategies for improving ROM, muscle strength and symptom management
  • identify appropriate splints and use for the various
  • identify strategies for effective communication with the patient, doctor and family
