Chapter 6: Clinical Examination of the Hand

This chapter describes clinical examination of the hand.  It describes the anatomy of the hand in relation to common clinical tests.  Details for examining range of motion, muscle/tendon strength, and vascularity are provided and common clinical tests are described.  Numerous pictures are utilized to assist with learning the material.  The purpose of the chapter is to ensure that therapists understand examination of the hand.

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

• Identify the importance of observation, inspection and palpation when examining the hand
• Understand normal posturing of the hand
• Perform a thorough range of motion assessment of the hand
• Perform muscle testing of the hand muscles and tendons
• Understand different methods with which to perform grip strength testing
