Chapter 10: Common Shoulder Diagnoses

This chapter provides a detailed yet easy to understand approach to the examination, pathology and treatment of the following diagnoses: cervical pathology, thoracic outlet syndrome/brachial plexopathy, proximal humeral fractures, frozen shoulder/adhesive capsulitis, glenohumeral instability and rotator cuff disease.  Thorough description of upper quadrant anatomy as well as proximal cervical screening gives a foundation to enhance the learning of common shoulder problems. Ten illustrations, six photos, clinical pearls, evaluation tips, time lines of healing, operative treatment, non-operative treatment, and precautions along with special “Tips from the Experts” will give the participant valuable information for their therapy practice. The role of the assistant and three case studies conclude the chapter and help round out the information.

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

• Identify anatomy of the shoulder and cervical region
• Understand the pathology, examination, non-operative and operative treatments of the following diagnosis:
  • thoracic outlet syndrome
  • brachial plexopathy
  • frozen shoulder/adhesive capsulitis
  • humeral head instability
  • rotator cuff disease
• Select conservative treatment options and exercises for the above diagnoses
• Identify precautions for the above diagnoses
• Define the differences in TUBS verse AMBRII in regard to humeral instability
• Classify the three stages of impingement syndrome
• Recognize the grading system for neural mobility testing
