Chapter 13: Common Wrist and Hand Fractures
This chapter covers fractures of the distal forearm, carpals, metacarpals and digits. It describes mechanisms of injury, evaluation, healing timelines, pathology, operative/non-operative procedures, complications and rehabilitation guidelines. Diagnosis-specific information, clinical reasoning, “clinical pearls” as well as “tips from the field” give practical information for the occupational and physical therapist to directly apply within the clinical setting. Thorough anatomy of the digits, carpals and distal forearm gives the reader full insight into understanding the treatment of these fractures and the resulting complications. The twenty one illustrations/photos facilitate the learning process. The role of the therapy assistant and two case studies conclude the chapter.
Highlights include:
- Clinical pearls
- Tips from the field
- Anatomy, diagnosis and pathology, timelines and healing, operative/non-operative treatment, therapeutic recommendations, and evaluation tips for the following fractures
- Distal radius fracture
- Carpal fractures
- Metacarpal fractures
- Phalangeal fractures
- 2 case studies
