4-week Interactive Online Course

This 4-week interactive multimedia online course is designed to provide participants with a detailed analysis of distal upper extremity anatomy. Review the anatomical structures of the hand, wrist, forearm and elbow from a clinical perspective and gain a deeper understanding of pathology and treatment from an anatomical viewpoint.

This course is designed to enhance your ability to understand and describe clinical scenarios from an anatomical perspective, including:

  • the anatomical difference between lateral epicondylitis and radial tunnel syndrome
  • the anatomical difference between medial epicondylitis, cubital tunnel syndrome, and pronator syndrome.
  • the anatomical difference between a DISI and a VISI wrist
  • the anatomical reason that some patients with distal radius fractures have problems with forearm rotation
  • anatomically, why the MCP joint is prone to extension contractures and why the PIP joint is prone to flexion contractures
  • what nerves and muscles are responsible for PIP extension
  • what is the extensor mechanism

For some, this course will be an excellent review of anatomy and its clinical  implications. For others, new and exciting information will be learned.

Course includes reading and written assignments, viewing online multi-media presentations, and participation in instructor-moderated online interactions via discussion boards and postings. Successful completion of course will be based on participation in online discussion boards, successful completion of ongoing quizzes, and passing final test.

 Course Objectives:

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Demonstrate advanced knowledge of distal upper extremity anatomy

  • Describe basic and advanced clinical scenarios from an anatomical perspective

  • Describe treatment implications from an anatomical perspective

Week 1: Elbow and Forearm Anatomy
The elbow and forearm are important for upper extremity function as these two joints play a critical role in positioning the hand for function. Understanding the structure of these two joints is important for successful rehabilitation of the elbow and forearm.

Week 2: Wrist Anatomy
The wrist is a very complex joint with numerous ligaments providing support to the joint. This module focuses on the basic anatomy of the wrist and utilizing the working knowledge of wrist anatomy to understand different clinical scenarios.

Weeks 3 and 4: Hand Anatomy
The hand is vital for function, and understanding the intricacies of the hand can help to understand how a small injury can have a significant functional impact. In this module, you will learn and understand the anatomical features of the hand.
