Chapter1: Fundamentals of Clinical Reasoning: Hand Therapy Concepts and Treatment Techniques
This chapter identifies fundamental hand therapy concepts that foster clinical reasoning. Treatment techniques and guidelines provided may be applied to patients with a variety of diagnoses. These techniques include: modalities, splinting, exercise and patient education.
Clinical pearls, 3 case studies, tips from the field and "thinking out of the treatment box" are provided to help the reader apply clinical reasoning in selecting safe treatment choices for patients with many different diagnoses.

Course Objectives:
Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:
- identify the three phases of tissue healing, and the correct treatment and splinting techniques appropriate for each stage
- identify the anti-deformity position and understand its use in splinting
- understand joint and musculotendinous tightness, and evaluation and treatment techniques
- identify modalities used in hand therapy and precautions for use
- understand scar management techniques and identify specific techniques and precautions
- identify the difference between static, serial static, static progressive, dynamic splinting
- describe correct fit, forces, precautions, and clinical use for exercise and function
- describe a chip bag and its uses in hand therapy
- identify the different types of exercises used for the upper extremity and describe their uses
