Chapter 45: Therapist's Management of Peripheral Nerve Injury

This chapter describes therapeutic considerations in the management of peripheral nerve injuries. Radial nerve, median nerve and ulnar nerve injuries are discussed from an anatomical, functional and treatment perspective. General information regarding intervention and treatment is included. Tables outline common substitution patterns patient’s exhibit following a radial, median or ulnar nerve injury as well as specifics regarding phases of rehabilitation. Numerous pictures are utilized to assist with learning the material.

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Describe early peripheral changes following a nerve injury
  • Understand the differences in presentation and treatment concerns regarding radial, median and ulnar nerve injuries
  • Realize the common deformities that can occur following a radial, median and ulnar nerve injury
  • Articulate areas the therapist needs to consider when devising a rehabilitation program
  • Articulate common substitution patterns
