Chapter 23: Preventing and Treating Stiffness

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:
- describe the different tissue specific causes of stiffness in the wrist and hand
- identify evaluation, treatment and prevention techniques specific to each tissue limitation
- identify different methods to prioritize treatment focus related to tissue limitations
- identify the 3 types of end-feel found in the wrist and fingers
- understand the effect on tissue from dynamic or static progressive splinting
- identify appropriate splints for specific tissue limitations
- identify basic splinting design guidelines for the base, outriggers, and use of traction
- describe techniques for evaluating the fit of your splint
- describe basic principles of splint wearing schedules
- identify strategies for effective communication with the patient, doctor and family
