Chapter 16:  Tendon Injury

This chapter addresses the fundamentals of tendon management.  Extensor tendons and flexor tendons are examined from an anatomical, pathological, surgical, and rehabilitation perspective.  Detailed drawings of the tendons, pulley system and zones of injury assist in understanding the intricate design of the tendon system.  Photographs illustrate some of the splints used in different rehabilitation protocols and charts display key information related to treatment protocols.  

The purpose of the chapter is to ensure that therapists understand the rationale behind tendon rehabilitation.

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Describe the anatomy and zones of the flexor and extensor tendons
  • Understand how anatomical features and zones of injury play a role in choosing the rehabilitation protocol
  • Understand the rationale for choosing immobilization, passive mobilization or active mobilization protocols
  • Identify precautions with tendon rehabilitation
  • Recognize questions that therapist needs to ask the surgeon regarding tendon injuries/repairs
  • Understand the splints commonly used in tendon rehabilitation
  • Understand how to progress tendon rehabilitation programs
