Chapter 4: Tone Abnormalities
This chapter provides a comprehensive overview of normal and abnormal tone and the use of modalities for treatment of abnormal tone.
Included are accepted definitions of muscle tone and its related concepts, methods of muscle tone measurement, anatomical and pathological factors that influence muscle tone, and issues that arise when tone is abnormal.
Both neuromuscular and musculoskeletal diagnostic groups are discussed, including strokes, brain injuries, Parkinson’s and spinal cord injuries. Hypotonicity, hypertonicity and appropriate interventions are reviewed by diagnostic categories. Four clinical case studies are presented with suggested interventions. Key concepts are highlighted through the use of “Clinical Pearls” and “Summary” boxes. An extensive glossary of terms and bibliography are provided.
