Chapter 7: Ultrasound
This chapter describes the history and development of clinical ultrasound (US). It defines ultrasound and explains how ultrasound waves are generated. After reading this chapter, the participant will be able to:
- identify the thermal and non-thermal effects of ultrasound
- choose the appropriate frequency, intensity, duty cycle and duration of ultrasound for different clinical scenarios
- identify precautions, contraindications, and adverse effects of ultrasound
- describe and understand the appropriate application technique, including choice of transmission medium, size of sound head, movement of sound head and treatment parameters
- describe guidelines for documentation
