Interested in learning about rehab techniques used in returning overhead athletes to competition?
This introductory course provides a foundation in sound principles of practice used in the treatment of patients involved in overhead throwing sports. Course focuses on treatment methods used in overhead throwing patients who present with complaints of shoulder pain, limitation in movement, instability and weakness. This course presents current positions in the care and management of shoulder pathologies seen in the overhead throwing athlete, applying the literature to current clinical practices.
Course features an overview of:
- Anatomy as it affects shoulder mechanics in the throwing shoulder;
- Assessment techniques employed to assess shoulder malfunction in the throwing shoulder;
- Application of therapeutic exercise involving isometric, isotonic and isodynamic training techniques needed to treat the throwing shoulder;
- Critical thinking skills utilized in the assessment and treatment of the throwing shoulder;
- Current literature providing the participant with a comprehensive review of references detailing care and treatment of the throwing shoulder

Course Objectives:
Upon completion of course, the therapist will be able to:
- Identify key anatomical components of the shoulder complex
- Correlate shoulder anatomy to movement in the overhead throwing athlete
- Relate findings in the anatomy to clinical assessment of the overhead throwing athlete
- Identify current principles of rehabilitation including the specific phases of rehabilitation for the overhead throwing athlete
- Develop treatment goals used when dealing with specific shoulder pathologies seen in the overhead throwing athlete
- Develop critical thinking skills and apply information regarding the principles in the treatment of patients with an overhead throwing injury
- Recognize and identify the current literature that relates to all aspects of the treatment of the patient with an overhead throwing injury

Mark Lombardi MA, ATC, PT, DPT, is a licensed physical therapist and athletic trainer with over 30 years of combined experience in athletic training and orthopedic based out-patient rehabilitation. Dr. Lombardi currently serves as the Clinical Director of Rehabilitation services at Scranton Orthopaedic Specialists in Dickson City, PA.
Dr. Lombardi has practiced extensively in an outpatient setting, treating patients across the spectrum of age, diagnosis and disability. In addition to his outpatient experiences, he has worked in professional baseball, international athletic events as well as having experience at the collegiate level working Division I sports.
Dr. Lombardi received a BA in Health and PE from Pacific Lutheran University in Tacoma, WA, an MA in Health Education from Miami University in Oxford, OH, an MS in Physical Therapy from College Misericordia in Dallas, PA, and a Doctorate in Physical Therapy from Temple University in Philadelphia, PA.
Dr. Lombardi is a Certified Athletic Trainer and a member of the American Physical Therapy Association, the National Athletic Trainers Association and The American Society of Shoulder and Elbow Therapists.He has experience as a certified examiner with the National Athletic Trainers Board of Certification and regularly reviews continuing education courses for the Board of Certification. In addition to his clinical involvement he also serves as an adjunct faculty member in the Department of Physical Therapy at Misericordia University teaching courses in The Athletic Shoulder and Functional Rehabilitation.
