Simplifying Management of the Wrist and Elbow:
An Analytical Approach to Upper Extremity Rehabilitation

Fast Facts:

Skill Level: Intermediate to advanced level

Who Should Attend:

  • occupational therapists
  • physical therapists
  • CHT's who work with upper extremity traumatic conditions

Locations:

There are no scheduled workshops at this time.

This intermediate to advanced level workshop focuses on the management of the wrist, carpals and elbow.  It is designed to enhance the understanding of the complexity of the wrist  and elbow joints, and the assessment and management of various conditions affecting them.

The purpose of this workshop is to enhance theoretical knowledge to be better able to problem solve and design treatment programs for a variety of upper extremity conditions.

Program subject to change. Participants are cautioned to apply new information and skills within the scope of state licensure law.

 Course Objectives:

Upon completion of workshop, therapist will:

  • understand the mechanism of wrist and carpal motion, and motion of the elbow joint
  • be able to sequentially assess and perform examination of the wrist and elbow
  • systematically plan treatment based on physiological, biological and biomechanical principles
  • understand the effect of trauma on wrist and carpal kinematics and stiffness of the elbow joint
  • understand management of  the carpus, distal radius, and elbow complex

This course features an in-depth presentation of:

  • anatomy of the wrist and forearm
  • kinematics of the wrist and forearm
  • evaluation of the wrist--with hands-on lab
  • carpal dislocations and instabilities
  • common surgical procedures of the wrist
  • Anatomy and biomechanics of the elbow
  • evaluation of the elbow
  • distal humeral fractures
  • olecranon and radial head fractures
  • dislocations of the elbow
  • carpal fractures
  • compressive neuropathies of the elbow
  • elbow evaluation hands-on lab

Video clips of biomechanics, surgery,  cadaver dissections presented throughout the PowerPoint presentations demonstrate the clinical reasoning and simplify understanding of this complex topic. Several ideas for research will be generated during the course to stimulate evidence based practice.
