This comprehensive two day workshop is designed for therapists with basic to intermediate level splinting skills—who want to improve their splint making skills for patients with neurological diagnoses and for patients in the acute care setting. Enhance theoretical knowledge and be better able to problem solve and choose the correct splints for patients with a variety of upper extremity conditions.
Improve your efficiency and take the fear factor out of splinting and
casting. Learn to master the mechanics of splint fabrication and cast
making with special techniques and helpful hints that let you create
professional looking upper extremity splints and casts—quickly and easily.
REMEMBER TO BRING ALONG SPLINTING SCISSORS, A SMALL GONIOMETER, AND A HOLE PUNCH --ALL LABELED WITH YOUR NAME.
Program subject to change. Participants are cautioned to apply new information and skills within the scope of state licensure law.
Course Objectives:
Upon completion, participant will:
- Identify surface and functional anatomy of the hand
- Identify anatomical considerations and principles of mechanics specific to static dynamic and static progressive splinting
- Identify neurophysiological theoretical frameworks and research conclusions that relate to splinting the neuro patient
- Recognize how principles of wound healing and scar formation determine the use of dynamic and static progressive splints
- List 5 splint making considerations related to the patient’s cognitive, functional and physical needs
- Identify categories and examples of frequently used pre-fabricated splints and orthoses for the neuro/acute care patient
- Identify the six characteristics of thermoplastics and the four characteristics of neoprene, and identify appropriate application for each material with a variety of patients
- Demonstrate the correct use of padding and strapping and
- Evaluate correctly each splint for correct fit, functional use and effectiveness
- Design and fabricate a variety of full size upper extremity splints
- Identify 3 possible wrist/finger deformities and appropriate splinting options for patients with neurological diagnosis
- Identify splinting goals that can be addressed with custom neoprene splints
- Correctly fabricate a wrist/hand cast using fct (focus casting therapy)techniques
- Lecture and discussion include:
- Functional anatomy
- Principles of splinting
- Biomechanics of splinting
- Principles of immobilization/mobilization
- Wound healing and tissue response to splinting
- Splinting precautions
- Clinical applications and splinting considerations for neuro patients
- Review of neurophysiological theoretical frameworks and research conclusions
- Analysis of thermoplastic and neoprene characteristics
- Review of splinting tools and materials
- Splint design and pattern making
- Custom vs. pre-cut patterns
- Strapping and padding choices
- Overview of current pre-fabricated splints and orthoses--including Saeboflex, Ness H200, and Neuro-IFRAH WHO

Susan Baum Locker MSEd, OTR/L is an Occupational Therapist with over 25 years of clinical experience. She has worked in a variety of settings: rehabilitation hospital, acute care, home health, independent living center and out-patient hand therapy clinics. She has been a member of the American Society of Hand Therapists since 1982 and is board certified by the state of California as an advanced practitioner in hand therapy, and in the use of modalities.
Susan has been teaching splinting workshops since 1991. She has been a guest lecturer at ASHT (American Society of Hand Therapists), AOTA (American Occupational Therapy Association) and OTAC (Occupational Therapy Association of California), RESNA (Rehabilitation Engineering Society of North America) and Hand Therapy Special Interest Groups.
She remains clinically active as an occupational therapist (in hospital and out-patient hand therapy settings) and as an educator for the therapy community. Due to her broad knowledge in UE management, and her love for teaching, Susan has been teaching and mentoring hand splinting throughout the United States since 1991. She provides workshops that facilitate an intensive, but relaxed learning environment. Topics include splinting for the orthopedic, neurological, acute and pediatric patient.
Susan has been an instructor at the University of Southern California, and has co-authored numerous articles in the field of physical disabilities.
About the Instructor:
"Susan is clear, concise and works hard to make sure you understand the information and techniques."
"Susan provided a thorough review of biomechanics and helped me apply them to splint making."
"Excellent course. Accomplished a lot...felt inspired!"
