Optional Pre-Course Splinting Lab Available
Lab-intensive splinting course focuses on splinting for cervical, brachial plexus and UE peripheral/compression/laceration neuropathies to optimize function and facilitate recovery from UE nerve injuries. Lecture, splinting demonstrations and hands-on splint labs with emphasis on post-operative nerve injury/surgery and/or compression neuropathies, disease-related neuropathies and appropriate functional immobilization or mobilization splinting.
Tuition includes all splinting materials and components (including Phoenix® Wrist Hinge and Phoenix Extended Outrigger) to make 15 full size splints!

Course Objectives:
Upon completion, the course participant will be able to:
- Recognize the principles of peripheral nerve injury splinting as related to brachial plexus, medican nerve, ulnar nerve and radial nerve injuries.
- Identify precautions and complications when splinting peripheral nerve injuries based on evidence based practice.
- Recognize how splinting the upper extremity nerve injury will prevent secondary injury and maximize patient function.
- Fabricate an appropriate splint for each case study clinical application for
the nerve injury presented:
- Full-arm splint with a volar pan resting "safe" position as used for brachial plexus injury
- DIP ring splints for the thumb and index fingers for PIN high median nerve injury
- Soft elastic, leather loop and neoprene strap thumb abduction splints for median nerve
- Flexible ulnar and median nerve combined injury anti-claw splint Volar wrist extension splint, neutral
- Dorsal wrist extension
- Volar pan resting splint
- Dynamic wrist extension splint
- Phoenix extended MP extension splint
- Ulnar claw splint
- Combined median-ulnar nerve anti claw with thumb spica
- Double ring Wartengerg's syndrome splint; trappers
- Serial casting to reduce PIP joint contractures
- Thumb web space stretch
- Cubital tunnel splint

Elizabeth Spencer Steffa, OTR/L, CHT is an Occupational Therapist since 1969 and a Certified Hand Therapist since 1991 and is presently a clinician in private practice. She has been a clinical faculty member at the University of Washington since 1987, a member of the American Society of Hand Therapists since 1979.
Betty is nationally respected for her workshops on hand rehabilitation, physical modalities, and splinting. She is coauthor of the chapter "Diagnosis and Rehabilitation of Peripheral Nerve Injuries" in Trauma Rehabilitation by Lawrence R. Robinson--Lippincott and Wilkins, 2006.
