Putting the Electric back into Electric Stim! Ultrasound and FES are two of the most commonly used (and abused) modalities in the Rehab field.  This course teaches therapists and assistants the basic science and research behind each modality, the appropriate diagnoses for which each is effective in treating, and appropriate documentation for reimbursement. Parameter selection, length and number of treatments, and appropriate outcomes are supported with evidence-based practice and a research review.

Areas of pain control, muscle weakness, swelling, spasm, ROM, and muscle re-education are addressed.  Applications that focus on both orthopedic and neurologic populations are included. Come prepared to have a hands-on experience in this lab-intensive course that encourages each participant to practice using a variety of modalities. To insure adequate hands-on time, this course provides one e-stim unit for each two students. Ultrasound is done in groups of 4-5.

Questions this course will answer:

  • Are there new applications for FES that have been added based on more recent research?
  • Do you use the same parameters for adults as for children?
  • Is FES more comfortable based on the waveform chosen?
  • Why do you use High Volt for wound healing?

Make sure to wear or bring shorts and a tank top to allow application of electrodes, and use of equipment during lab sessions.

Program subject to change. Participants are cautioned to apply new information and skills within the scope of state licensure law.

 Course Objectives:

Upon completing the ultrasound portion of the course, the participant will be able to:

  • list/identify appropriate ultrasound treatment parameters for a variety of clinical diagnoses
  • recognize/identify the basic properties of ultrasound
  • recognize the current research which provides evidence for therapeutic uses of ultrasound
  • list the contraindications for therapeutic ultrasound
  • identify how to use, store and document us mediums and medications

Upon completing the electrical stimulation portion of the course, the participant will be able to:

  • recognize current research which provides evidence for therapeutic and rehabilitative uses of FES/TENS with specific awareness of the similarities and differences between FES, High Volt and Medium Frequency
  • identify the parameters necessary to deliver FES with each waveform depending on diagnosis and intent of treatment
  • recognize the differences in parameter settings for neurological and orthopedic patients
  • be familiar with the current literature based on the changes in use of FES in neurological insults
  • list all parameters, guidelines, precautions for TENS/FES units to be sent home with patients - including expectations and outcomes
  • identify the principle of electrode size, material, and placement technique.
  • recognize/identify the guidelines and contraindications in working with electrical stimulation
  • identify and differentiate the use and choice of parameters for FES/TENS with different patient populations and for different diagnoses.

What people are saying about the instructor:

PT/ATC 19 yrs - Sports-ortho-pain   "I appreciated Ms. Shapiro's  clarity and knowledge. I also like the small class setting, allowing lots of personal attention. I learned a lot. Thanx."

PT 30+ yrs/pediatrics  "Thanks very much - great course.  Appreciate your vast knowledge, accessibility, openness to discussion, warmth!"

PT 30 yr/pediatrics " Enjoyed all the practical and creative insights looking at function and the whole person,- very enjoyable, thank you."

OTR 15 yrs/Pediatric acute rehab - "Sara is very enjoyable, knowledgeable and presents her information in extremely practical manner. I can apply the information I learned in my practice right away"

Sara made a somewhat dry subject more interesting.  Enjoyed the case studies and the "real life" patient applications and examples.

Sara provides ample opportunities for questions & answers. It was helpful to get clarification on some of the long held "myths" we have been taught.
