Management of Upper Extremity Stiff Joints
Intermediate level course is designed to enhance the understanding of the impact of joint stiffness on functioning of the elbow, wrist, and hand. This comprehensive course provides an analytical approach to the rehabilitation of upper extremity stiff joints.
Lecture includes animation and video-clips of cadaver dissection, surgery, pathomechanics, and treatment to enhance the learning experience.
Program subject to change. During hands-on lab sessions, course instructor(s) will evaluate each participant’s techniques/skills learned to determine proficiency for course completion. Post test at end of course will assess your new knowledge. This course content is not intended for use by any participants outside the scope of their license or regulation.
Course Objectives:
Upon completion of course, therapist will:
- identify the anatomical structures of the joint
- demonstrate the physiology of motion and causes of joint stiffness
- describe physiology of the muscle and muscle contractures leading to stiffness
- describe various stages of wound healing and it’s effect on joint stiffness
- demonstrate the principles of splinting and CPM
- effectively manage stiff hand, wrist and elbow by using the above knowledge

Instructors:
Shrikant J. Chinchalkar OTR, CHT
is a hand therapist with over 40 years of clinical experience in treating upper extremity conditions and over 30 years of teaching experience. He designed and developed Hand Therapy programs at four major teaching centers in Canada. He conducted many instructional courses on upper extremity rehabilitation in over 20 countries in the world and has won many awards for his presentations. He has over 250 presentations to his credit.
He was awarded the “Dr. Paul Brand Award of Excellence” by the American Society of Hand Therapists (ASHT), “Award of Leadership” by the Canadian Association of Occupational Therapists (CAOT), “Award of Excellence” by the Sisters of St. Joseph’s Hospital, “Best Educator” by the Western University and the “Lifetime Membership Award” by the Canadian Society of Hand Therapists. He authored five book chapters and has published 27 papers and 15 abstracts in numerous peer-reviewed journals related to Upper Extremity Surgery and Therapy.
