Management of Upper Extremity Tendon Injuries and Fractures with Hands-On Orthotic Fabrication Labs
This intermediate level course is designed to enhance the understanding of the impact of tendon injuries and fractures on the wrist and hand. The comprehensive course provides an analytical approach to the rehabilitation of tendon injuries and fractures, combined with hands-on orthotic fabrication (splinting) lab sessions.
Animation and video-clips of cadaver dissection, surgery, pathomechanics, and treatment enhance the learning experience. Class size is limited to maximize participant to faculty interaction.

- Architecture of the hand & Wrist
- Flexor Tendon Anatomy, Biomechanics and Management of Tendon Injuries
- Extensor Tendon Anatomy, Biomechanics and Management of Extensor Tendon Injuries
- Distal Radius Fractures
- Fractures and Dislocations of the Hand
- Hands on Orthotic Fabrication (splinting) Labs
Program subject to change. During hands-on lab sessions, course instructor(s) will evaluate each participant’s techniques/skills learned to determine proficiency for course completion. This course content is not intended for use by any participants outside the scope of their license or regulation.
Course Objectives:
Upon completion of course, therapist will be able to:
- identify the anatomy of the hand, with special focus on flexor tendons, and extensor tendons
- list the various methods for management of flexor and extensor tendons using various methods described in the literature & practice
- list/recognize the different methods for the management of hand fractures – Metacarpal, Proximal and Middle phalanges fractures
- list/recognize the different methods for management of distal radius fractures
- fabricate dynamic and static progressive orthoses for the wrist and hand
- utilize clinical reasoning for treatment of various injuries of the hand based on skeletal and tendon mechanics

Instructors:
Shrikant J. Chinchalkar OTR, CHT
is a hand therapist with over 40 years of clinical experience in treating upper extremity conditions and over 30 years of teaching experience. He designed and developed Hand Therapy programs at four major teaching centers in Canada. He conducted many instructional courses on upper extremity rehabilitation in over 20 countries in the world and has won many awards for his presentations. He has over 250 presentations to his credit.
He was awarded the “Dr. Paul Brand Award of Excellence” by the American Society of Hand Therapists (ASHT), “Award of Leadership” by the Canadian Association of Occupational Therapists (CAOT), “Award of Excellence” by the Sisters of St. Joseph’s Hospital, “Best Educator” by the Western University and the “Lifetime Membership Award” by the Canadian Society of Hand Therapists. He authored five book chapters and has published 27 papers and 15 abstracts in numerous peer-reviewed journals related to Upper Extremity Surgery and Therapy.
