Treatment of Infants and Young Children (0-3) with Obstetric Brachial Plexus Injuries (Live Webinar)

This live interactive webinar addresses all aspects of conservative and surgical management of Obstetrical Brachial Plexus Injury over the course of infancy and early childhood.

The number of infants with OBPI has been increasing posing new challenges to therapists working with the 0-3 population. Participants in this webinar

will be presented with a detailed overview of the anatomy of the initial nerve injury and the muscular and bony sequela that are present in infancy and early childhood.

Gain a detailed understanding of surgical interventions, non-surgical medical interventions, and radiological tests enabling you to make appropriate medical referrals at the right time in early development.

Learn comprehensive examination and intervention strategies for each stage of recovery throughout infancy and early childhood. Presentation features videotaped demonstrations of specific examination tools and intervention strategies including traditional interventions as well as the use of state-of-the art technology. Strategies for family support and intervention will be discussed as well.

Course Objectives:

Upon completing this course, the participant will be able to:

  • Understand the nerve anatomy specific to the newborn brachial plexus and classification as to location and severity of injury
  • Understand options for surgical interventions for infants and young children
  • Understand the neurological, orthopedic and developmental sequela of Obstetric Brachial Plexus Injury
  • Be able to perform a thorough examination and evaluation of the infant and young child with an Obstetrical Brachial Plexus Injury
  • Assess and develop an ongoing treatment plan to assist the infant and young child to achieve their fullest potential

Instructors:

Cindy Servello, MA, OTR

has been a practicing pediatric occupational therapist for the last thirty-five years. Over the last ten years, she has developed a specialty expertise in the treatment of infants and children with obstetric brachial plexus injuries.

In addition to being the primary therapist for The Neonatal Brachial Plexus Center in New Jersey with a group of pediatric neurologists, she serves as the national therapist consultant for the Texas Nerve and Paralysis Institute where her responsibilities include consultation to therapists, parents, and physicians, primary involvement in clinics nationally in coordination with top level surgeons and brachial plexus specialists, and participation in brachial plexus seminars which address state-of-the-art surgical and treatment interventions.
