Therapeutic Management of Flexor Tendon Injuries in Pediatric Patients

The post operative management of flexor tendon repair requires specific knowledge of the appropriate treatment intervention, especially for the pediatric population. This hybrid online course will review basic flexor tendon anatomy, compare the etiology of adult vs. pediatric injuries, describe common surgical intervention, and review research/rationale for early active treatment.

The instructors will present an evidence-based, step-by-step approach, stressing a balance between tendon protection and healing. Pediatric focused treatment suggestions and home program ideas will be provided for each step of the process, including later scar management techniques.

An instructional video will demonstrate how to make a pediatric dorsal blocking orthosis and attendees will independently fabricate their own orthosis. A case study will allow attendees to devise their own treatment plan.  This treatment plan and a photo of the orthosis will be submitted for instructor review and will subsequently be discussed in a live interactive Zoom classroom led by the instructors.

Course Requirements:

As a requirement of this course, you will need to:

  • view recorded lectures and demonstrations prior to attending the Virtual Classroom via Zoom.
  • have access to splinting tools and supplies.
  • have access to another person (child or adult) on whom you can fabricate a dorsal blocking orthosis (DBO).
  • complete a dorsal blocking orthosis fabricated on another person.
  • photograph and share access to photos of your dorsal blocking orthoses. You will submit links to your photos in your cloud storage, i.e. Dropbox, Google Drive, iCloud, etc. (Due to file size limitations, file uploads may not be supported by email.)
  • demonstrate proficiency with orthosis fabrication. Instructor will evaluate orthosis fabrication and determine proficiency of 100% correct using 3 variables.
  • complete quizzes at end of each lesson, and case study assignments.
  • participate in a scheduled one-hour Virtual Classroom sessions (via Zoom) with the instructors. This will review fabrication techniques, completed orthoses, case studies and provide additional opportunity for questions and answers.
  • complete course post-test with a passing grade of 85%
  • complete course evaluation.

 Technology Requirements:

  • computer/tablet with speakers and good internet access to view course videos.
  • computer/tablet with webcam, microphone and speakers or Smartphone will be needed to participate in Zoom meeting with instructor.
  • Smartphone camera or digital camera/camcorder will be needed to photograph or video record fabrication of specific orthoses.

By the end of this course, participants will:

  • Identify three characteristics of appropriate pediatric candidates for early active motion treatment protocols
  • Describe the current recommended position of the wrist, MP joints and IP joints in an appropriate immobilization device after surgical repair of a flexor tendon.
  • Fabricate a dorsal blocking orthosis following the instructional video. The participant will submit a photo of the orthosis which will be critiqued in a live Zoom with instructors.
  • List two factors that should be assessed at each visit to determine pace of progression of your treatment protocol.
  • Identify 2 strategies to help improve compliance with home program and orthotic use for a pediatric patient who recently underwent surgical repair of the flexor tendon.
  • Devise a treatment plan for assigned case study and submit it for review in a live Zoom with the instructors

Instructors:

Jill Peck-Murray, MOT, OTR/L, CHT

is a pediatric hand therapist. She worked as an occupational therapist/hand therapist at Rady Children’s Hospital in San Diego, California from 1982-2017. During those 35 years, she gained expertise in pediatric hand therapy and special skills in creative orthotic intervention and developed the pediatric hand therapy program for the hospital.

She is currently devoting her time to sharing her knowledge with the therapy community by teaching continuing education courses. Since 2007, she has been a national CEU instructor for Rehab Education, LLC.

Jill has authored several journal articles, two chapters on pediatric splinting/orthotic intervention, and she has co-authored a book entitled “101 Creative Therapy Ideas.”  She has presented at multiple national and international conferences for professional organizations.

Yvonne Morris, OTR/L, CHT

Born in Dublin, Ireland, Yvonne Morris, OTR/L, CHT is an occupational therapist/hand therapist who had broad clinical experience in Ireland and England before working as a traveling therapist throughout the US. Since obtaining her certification in hand therapy in 2001, she has specialized in the treatment of pediatric hand patients at Valley Children’s Hospital in California’s Central Valley.

 She has presented on pediatric hand therapy topics at several national and international professional conferences. She is the author of a pre-school children’s book entitled “The Bear in the Bookstore”.
